Origin

The pattern of this hand-knotted Tuja rug shows variations on the time-honoured tree-of-life motif. Tuja rugs are adorned with elements of the tree of life. We have developed two versions of the Tuja motif: in one, the various Tuja motifs look as though they had been scattered across the rug at random. In the other, individual tendrils and leaves are arranged in lengthwise stripes of different colours, framed by a monochrome border. Our Tuja rugs are tuned to contemporary taste: harmonious colour compositions in natural shades flatter the variations on the traditional pattern. Another characteristic feature is the fringes – as on our Oxiana rugs – which have been gathered into small bundles and wrapped with threads in different colours.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for this Tuja's pile is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant-based colours is more complicated, more costly and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical dyes. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, you even need two kilograms of the dyestuff weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time-consuming and labour-intensive too. On top of that, fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.

The weft and warp threads of this Tuja are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
