Turkish Oriental rug

This one-of-a-kind piece in light red and terracotta combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 90,000 knots per m², the painstaking work shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the finely worked details. At 308 × 256 cm it works well as a large living-room rug. It also looks great in an open-plan living and dining area. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a piece of furnishing – it is a piece of traditional textile art with a character of its own and lasting value.

The pattern of this Oriental rug is inspired by classic Persian rug designs. This rug was knotted in Turkey.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for this Turkish Oriental rug's pile is over 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, you even need two kilograms of the dyestuff weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is just as time- and labour-intensive. And fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Turkish Oriental rug is made of new wool.
