Origin and design

Varamin (also spelled Veramin) lies about 50 km southeast of Iran's capital, Tehran, in northern Iran and was an important administrative center during the Mongol period. Its proximity to Tehran, with its higher wage levels, has led to the decline of Veramin carpet weaving. It is believed that carpet weaving was established here around the same time as in Qom, at the beginning of the 20th century, and that the workshops were originally set up by Tehran investors. This theory is supported in particular by the color compositions of early Varamin carpets, which are reminiscent of those of Qom carpets.
