Varamin

This rug in red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At approx. 160k-200k knots per m² the work involved is considerable, and you can see it in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 388 × 293 cm make it a large living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character to the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Varamin (also spelled Veramin) lies a good 50 km south-east of Iran's capital Tehran, in the north of the country, and was an important administrative centre under Mongol rule. Because the capital Tehran is so close and wages there are higher, Veramin rugs are now hardly knotted at all. It is assumed that the knotting craft took hold here at roughly the same time as in Qom, that is at the beginning of the 20 century, and that the workshops were once set up by investors from Tehran. What speaks for this theory above all are the colour compositions of early Varamins, which recall those of Qom rugs.

Material

The pile of this Varamin was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally proofed against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
