Origin

Some of our old Oriental rugs are given a more modern look through an elaborate process. We call these rugs vintage rugs. Vintage rugs are design objects in which traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary interior culture. The new dyeing lends the traditional patterns of Oriental rugs a timeless character. Rugs whose colours have fallen out of fashion are thus given a second life in a more modern guise. Using old rugs as the raw material for new pieces saves resources and is sustainable. This piece is the real thing — it began life as a classic Persian rug. Now, if not before, it is a genuine eye-catcher! The rug was stripped of its colour and dyed navy blue. The pile was also largely removed, so that the classic Oriental pattern shows through only in places. This abstract work combines the classic and the modern — the perfect eye-catcher for your home!

Pattern

The pattern, inspired by classic Oriental ornament, gives the impression that this hand-knotted rug already has a long history behind it. It looks washed out or faded, and almost abstract as a result. In reality, of course, this vintage rug is new and belongs to the latest generation of contemporary rug design. It bridges modern designs and interiors on one side and classic Oriental motifs on the other. The pattern is restrained and yet clearly present.

The colours of this vintage rug form a gradient and flow into one another.

Individual areas of the pattern have a higher pile than the rest of this rug. The patterns of modern rugs are tending to become plainer and more abstract. Playing with different pile heights is a new approach, and it has replaced more elaborate, more insistent patterns. Because parts of the pattern have been brought out in two dimensions, though, the rug never looks dull. The accentuation is out of the ordinary and has a truly distinctive effect.

The clear, abstract design of this contemporary rug speaks especially to people who love simple, modern interiors and architecture. The design idea for this rug comes from Europe. Free from the rules of traditional rug patterns, it was developed for Western art and interior styles. That is not an entirely new development, though. The roots of European rug design go back to Art Deco rugs, which were made to Western specifications between the late twenties and the fifties.

The colour of this vintage rug is dark blue.

Material

The pile of this vintage rug is hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this vintage rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
