Wiss

There is only one rug like this in dark red and dark blue: it unites traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 120,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the fine detailing. At 332 × 308 cm it is in its element as a square rug. It shows just as well in the living room. Colouring and texture give the room a welcoming atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

This rug was hand-knotted in the small town of Wiss in the so-called Sarough region. Wiss lies on the road from Arak to Isfahan in western Iran. Almost every private household in Wiss has a knotting loom. Sturdy rugs with traditional patterns are knotted here. Typical of rugs from Wiss is the dominant hexagon as the medallion in the central field, framed above and below by a hooked lozenge.

The pile of Wiss rugs is traditionally dyed with madder-red plant dyes – obtained from the root of the madder plant (Rubia tinctorium).

Material

The pile of this Wiss was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally proofed against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Wiss are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Wiss. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 1975. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has grown a little thinner over the years. The edges of the rug are damaged in places and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Wiss because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would prefer, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Wiss will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
