Origin and design

This carpet was hand-knotted in the town of Wiss in the Sarough region. Wiss lies on the road from Arak to Isfahan in western Iran. Almost every private home in Wiss has a loom. Here, robust carpets with traditional patterns are woven. Typical of Wiss carpets is the dominant hexagon as a medallion in the center, surrounded above and below by two diamond-shaped hooks.

The pile of Wiss carpets is traditionally dyed with madder-red plant dyes – which are extracted from the root of the madder plant (Rubia tinctorium).
