From around 500 euros the step up becomes visible: the rugs grow larger – 1.5 to 3.2 m² is typical, which means sizes from 150 x 200 to 170 x 240 cm – and the choice of runners is at its largest here. For a living room piece of 200 x 300 cm the budget does not quite stretch.
Between 500 and 1,000 euros you get what most people are really looking for when they buy a rug: the rug becomes big enough to carry a room. Half of the pieces in this segment are over two square metres, a quarter over three. That puts you in sizes that take a coffee table on top, frame a bed or hold a dining area for two to four people together.
Do the maths and in this band you pay around 300 euros per square metre – only a little more than in the bracket below. In other words: what you are mainly buying is more surface, not more fineness. Silk remains the exception; where it does appear, it is usually an accent thread, not a silk pile.
