Yes, we send our rugs all over the world. However, only shipping within the EU is free of charge. If you live outside the EU, we'll of course still arrange the shipping for you. Just send us a short message about it.

We have for over 40 years had a rug shop in Düsseldorf. If you live in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area , we're happy to deliver 2 – 3 rugs to your home free of charge, so you can choose in peace and advise you in person. While you're planning, we're also glad to visit you at home beforehand, so that we can then pick a harmonious selection in the right size together from the rugs in our collection.

The wool of the Kelims on the front of the cushions was dyed with natural dyes. If the wool gets damp, the natural dyes may bleed a little. When dry, though, the cushions shouldn't transfer any colour.

We advise you againstwashing the cushions in the washing machine . At high spin speeds the seams can come apart. What's more, the natural dyes may run in the machine under certain conditions. It's best to clean stains carefully by hand with an emulsion of gall soap and lukewarm water. That way you can easily see how the wool and the natural dyes react.

It isn't only the price that depends on the rug's material. Whether a rug suits your particular way of living is largely down to its material as well. Do you need a rug that is soft and easy to care for? Are you looking for an organic "look and feel" for your living space? 

And of course the quality of your rug also depends on how densely it is knotted. 

We have set prices for the different rug qualities and then charge per square metre according to size.

Size matters. With rugs, at least, it certainly does. A rug has to be in proportion to the rest of the room and big enough to serve its particular purpose. Living room, dining room, bedroom or study – every room has a different job to do, and the size of the rug has to follow suit. Nothing is worse than wobbling dining chairs, or a living room rug that leaves the dog no space during the Sunday night crime drama.

Technically speaking, a rug's fringes are nothing other than the warp threads that stick out at the short ends. So the fringes can tell you which warp material was used.

Once you understand where a particular pattern comes from and what certain symbols stand for, older rugs offer fascinating glimpses into their history. There was a time when the design of an Oriental rug told you, with reasonable certainty, the country, the town or even the village it was woven in. Because the patterns spread around the world after the great commercial expansion at the beginning of the 20th century, that is less often the case today.

We have deliberately chosen not to restore every one of our rugs. We believe in the charm of old, well-used objects and we don't want to conceal the history of the rugs. Worn patches and frayed fringes tell us the rug's story and are part of its identity. Especially in a digitised world, craftsmanship that has aged with dignity has a special magic. 

As we understand it, antique rugs are at least 80 years old. In the Vintage category you'll find rugs that are between 20 and 70 years old.

If the rug doesn't suit your rooms after all, we give you the option of sending it back to us within 14 days, free of charge . We'll refund your money and you can try a new rug.

To do so, pack the rug back into the Repack/box that we sent you. Just ask us for a returns label for free return shipping.

The patterning of Kelim rugs comes from the coloured weft threads that are woven through the warp threads. Every new colour calls for a new thread in each row. The thread ends are woven in as well. As a result, a narrow slit appears in the weave between two areas of different colour. That's why these hand-woven rugs are also known as slit-weave Kelims.

About every four years your rug should be professionally washed and cleaned as a matter of routine. In urban surroundings, dirt and soot settle deep into rugs and textiles. Central or underfloor heating can also make rugs dry out. In a professional rug wash the rug is not only cleaned but also rehydrated and the wool is re-oiled.

Simply touching the rug is an easy and effective way to tell how dirty it is. Run your open hand over the pile, against the direction of the nap. If your hand feels dirty or sticky afterwards, the rug needs cleaning.

A close visual inspection of the pile and the foundation will tell you whether the dirt has already built up enough to work into the weft and warp threads and damage them. Gently part the wool to check the weft and warp threads for dirt.

What does it look like under the rug? Check the rug pad and the floor beneath it to gauge how clean the rug really is. Dust and fine micro-particles on the floor are a sign that a rug needs washing.

Stains are the clearest sign that a rug should be cleaned. Stains tend to harden and work their way into the fibres as they dry or when they are rubbed with the wrong products. The quick and correct first treatment is what matters most.

Cleaning hand-knotted wool rugs starts at 24,90 € per square metre. The exact price depends on the individual piece, though. It costs more if the pile is especially deep, for example, if the rug is 40 years old or older, or if silk has been worked into it. Pure silk rugs are far more involved to clean. For silk rugs washing costs around 70 € per square metre.

For stain treatments or other work you ask us to carry out, additional costs may apply. Of course, we'll give you a binding cost estimate before you place the order. We have been pricing our work transparently and fairly for more than forty years. We expressly warn against fraudsters who have been damaging the reputation of our trade for some years now. 

Yes, we charge at least 100 € per rug for cleaning. Below that, the work simply isn't viable for us.

Every rug is washed carefully and gently by hand with a special curd soap solution matched to the particular needs of your rugs.

If no additional repairs are needed, you can expect a rug wash with us to take 1 to 2 weeks. If repairs are required, the timeframe depends on what exactly needs doing.

Basically, every rug can still be saved. Thanks to our experience with rug repairs, we can mend the vast majority of damage to your rugs so that it is no longer visible afterwards. On some rugs the fringes simply need securing or the overcasting renewing. But we can also rebuild the foundation (weft & warp threads), fill entire holes or tears by re-knotting the affected areas, re-knot the fringes and restore worn patches. 

Often, though, a repair is a question of proportionality. As a rule, the cost bears no sensible relation to the benefit, that is, to the value of the rug. Do send us a photo of your rug and we'll tell you what a repair would cost and whether it's worth it.

There's no blanket answer to that. It mainly depends on what needs to be done to your rug. When we prepare a cost estimate for you, we'll also tell you how long the repair will take in your case.

So that we can judge all the damage properly and the rug's colours are visible again, we always recommend a Rug washing before the repair.

Naturally, we are working flat out on developing a flying carpet. Sadly, a breakthrough is not in sight just yet. The idea of a flying carpet, by the way, is nowhere near as old as you might think. 

Contrary to popular belief, flying carpets appear only rarely in the tales of the Thousand and One Nights. The Galland manuscript, the oldest manuscript of the Thousand and One Nights, covering the first 282 nights, does not mention flying carpets at all, for instance. A few supernatural flying craft do turn up in the wider body of tales, though, for example in the translation by Gustav Weil (1865).

In Weil's tale Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Aladdin has Princess Bedrulbudur carried off on her wedding night, together with her bridegroom in their shared bed, and brought back the next morning. The bed is borne through the air by the genie of the lamp. A flying carpet does not feature in this version originally, but it does in the many adaptations, such as Disney's animated film Aladdin from 1992.
