Upcycled rugs

Upcycled rugs are rugs made from material that already exists: at Zomorrodi these are patchwork rugs made from fragments of old Oriental rugs pieced together anew, and outdoor rugs that are hand-woven from recycled PET bottles. Both save wool, dye, water and transport – and the result looks anything but like leftovers put to use.

Sustainability matters to us. That is why we believe in upcycled rugs. Buying a pre-owned rug is not only sustainable but also an environmentally friendly choice: no new materials such as wool need to be produced or dyed, and the rug does not have to be knotted or shipped all over again.

Patchwork: a new life for old Oriental rugs

We are committed to upcycling old Oriental rugs by reassembling them into one-of-a-kind patchwork rugs. Rugs that can no longer be saved as a whole are taken apart, and the intact sections are cut to size, stitched together and given a sturdy backing. This method extends the life of the rugs and saves resources. The result: a rug with the depth of colour and patina of old wool in a modern, graphic layout.

Outdoor rugs made from recycled PET bottles

And it doesn't stop there – rug making has sustainable innovations of its own. Modern techniques make it possible to produce rugs in an environmentally friendly way. Our rugs made from recycled PET bottles are one example: the yarn is made from shredded bottles and woven by hand. These rugs are water-resistant, colourfast and light, and they can be cleaned with a garden hose – ideal for the terrace, balcony, bathroom, kitchen or conservatory.

Why upcycling at a rug dealer?

A hand-knotted wool rug lasts for decades – which in itself already makes it the most sustainable choice. Upcycling goes one step further and uses what is already there. Upcycling and sustainability are the future – and they could hardly be more beautiful. Discover our sustainable upcycling rugs now.

Frequently asked questions about upcycling rugs

What is an upcycling rug?

An upcycling rug is made from material that already exists – for example from fragments of old Oriental rugs sewn together into a patchwork rug, or from yarn made of recycled PET bottles. No new wool has to be produced and no new dyes are needed.

What are patchwork rugs made of?

From sections of old hand-knotted Oriental rugs made of wool. The intact areas are cut to size, sewn together and given a sturdy backing. Every patchwork rug is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Are PET outdoor rugs really weatherproof?

Yes. The yarn made from recycled PET bottles does not absorb water, barely fades and does not go mouldy. Even so, the rug should not be left lying in puddles for long, and it can be rolled up over the winter.

How do I clean a PET outdoor rug?

Rinse it with water, using a mild soap and a soft brush if needed, then leave it to dry. For everyday care, shaking it out or vacuuming is enough.

What does an upcycling rug cost?

PET outdoor rugs start at around 290 € (160 × 230 cm), patchwork rugs made from old Oriental rugs at about 480 €. The price is listed with every rug.
