Chinese Tabriz

This one-of-a-kind piece in beige and dark red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 490,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 372 × 83 cm it works beautifully as a runner or hallway rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a piece of furnishing – it is a piece of traditional textile art with a character of its own and lasting value.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

The pattern of this rug takes its inspiration from the designs of classic Chinese Tabriz rugs. This rug, however, was knotted in China.

Material

The pile of this Chinese Tabriz was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Chinese Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Chinese Tabriz has a story to tell. The edge of this runner is a little wavy, but it can be restored. It was knotted around 46. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
