Origin and design

Hamadan (also spelled Hamedan) carpets are woven in the area surrounding the city of Hamadan in northwestern Iran. Hamadan is one of the oldest cities in Persia and lies amidst a well-irrigated fruit-growing region on the banks of the Qareh River at the foot of the Zagros Mountains. Carpet weaving has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is a collective name, as carpets from farmers, nomads, and many surrounding villages are sold in Hamedan. A typical characteristic of carpets from the Hamadan region is that they are woven using the Turkish knot, a single-strand weft thread. This means that a weft thread is inserted after each row of knots. Persian carpets are usually woven using two or three strands.
