Keshan

This rug in rust red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With approx. 200,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Its 191 × 131 cm make it a small living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece, it brings individual character to the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

The central Persian city of Keshan (also written Kashan or Keschan) lies between the mountain slopes of the Zagros range and the Persian desert regions. Thanks to its climate and the caravans that crossed the country, it was – at least until the Safavids moved their seat of government to Isfahan – a flourishing metropolis, known above all for its fabric and rug production. To this day the city is shaped by the elegance and splendour of that era. Keshan rugs are artful textiles made in an age-old tradition. In Keshan, production traditionally took place in the weavers' own homes. The pile is typically knotted from extremely soft wool, which makes it particularly dense and compact.

Material

The pile of this Keshan was knotted from what is known as kork wool. Kork wool – also spelled kurk – is a particularly fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner sides of the sheep's legs, which makes it especially high in quality.

The weft and warp threads of this Keshan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Keshan has a story to tell. It was knotted around 46. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
