Keshan

This rug in blue-grey combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 300,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Its 505 × 340 cm make it a large living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into the room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

The central Persian city of Keshan (also written Kashan or Keschan) lies between the mountain slopes of the Zagros range and the Persian desert regions. Thanks to its climate and the caravans that crossed the country, it was – at least until the Safavids moved their seat of government to Isfahan – a flourishing metropolis, known above all for its fabric and rug production. To this day the city is shaped by the elegance and splendour of that era. Keshan rugs are artful textiles made in an age-old tradition. In Keshan, production traditionally took place in the weavers' own homes. The pile is typically knotted from extremely soft wool, which makes it particularly dense and compact.

Material

The pile of this Keshan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the fibre, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Keshan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Keshan has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 56. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, unrestored condition. At first glance this enormous Keshan appears to be in good shape. On closer inspection, however, you will notice a number of worn patches, some of them very heavily trodden. In places there are also some perished, brittle areas. We have not restored this Keshan, because we feel it has a special presence exactly as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Keshan will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
