Place of origin
Koliai (also Koliahi, Koliay) rugs are rural, hand-knotted rugs made by the Kurds of Western Persia. Koliai are relatively high-pile, of massive, full-bodied knotting with the Turkish knot and are sometimes knotted on a wool ground weave (weft & warp threads of wool).
Kurds make use of all classical provenances (origin, source) for the rug knotting. However, they do not blindly imitate traditional patterns, but put them into practice in their own way. Especially the colors often deviate strongly from original patterns. Thus, Koliai rugs come in a wide variety of designs, but mostly with a rather dark color scheme.
Patterns
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Koliali. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It blends in fantastically with any surroundings and subtly complements the interior design of a room..
The embellished edging (border) forms a glorious contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.
The repeating elements in the center field of this Koliali rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.
The luxuriant flower motifs of this Koliali are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
The background of this Koliali is dark blue. The colors rusty red and dark blue dominate the overall impression. The border is held in similar colors as the rest of the rug.
Condition
This Koliali has a story. It was hand knotted about 1950. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.
Material
The pile of this Koliali has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Koliali are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
