Malayer
Craftsmanship and timeless elegance come together in this rug in light red. A knot density of around 200,000 knots per m² makes the demanding workmanship visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 274 × 130 cm, it is well placed as a living room rug. Its colouring and texture give any room a homely, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece that will last for years.

Origin
Malayer is the second-largest city in the province of Hamadan in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The city of Malayer as it stands today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state.
Material
The pile of this Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Malayer is made of new wool.
Condition
This Malayer has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. In a few places the pile has grown a little thinner over the years. The fringes are also in need of repair in parts. We have not fully restored this Malayer, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
