This one-of-a-kind piece in dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 150,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing and the fine execution of the details. At 400 × 300 cm it works beautifully as a large living-room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic structure lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with an individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Tabriz. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 46. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result it is – despite its age – in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
