Place of origin

This rug was knotted by members of Turkmen tribes. The Turkmen are known especially for their Bukhara rugs. Bukhara ( sometimes also Bokhara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan, situated along the former Silk Road. Although no rugs were knotted in Bukhara itself, the city has given its name to many oriental rugs, because they were traditionally exported to the West from Bukhara. But these rugs were knotted by Turkmen tribes like the Yomoudh or Tekke. This old Turkaman Rug is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.

Patterns

The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Turkaman Rug. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The repeating elements in the center field of this Turkaman Rug rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.

The embellished edging (border) forms a glorious contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

The background of this Turkaman Rug is dark blue. The border features dark brown, dark red and dark blue.

Condition

You are not the first to appreciate this Turkaman Rug. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Turkaman Rug because we think it is as it is effect. If you would like, we will of course restore the rug further for you. We can restore almost any rug to an almost perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Turkaman Rug has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The backing (weft and warp threads) of this Turkaman Rug is made of virgin wool.
