Place of origin

The pattern of this rug is inspired by the pattern of classic Bijar. However, this rug was knotted in India.

The exact time of the emergence of Indian rug production is unknown. Probably the first Indian rugs were made at the time of the cultural boom in the Mughal dynasty, in the mid-16th century. In the mid-19th century, with the decline of the Mughal dynasty, Indian rug production fell into a crisis. European companies, whose sole aim was to export to the West, replaced traditional court manufactories. Very similar rugs were produced in different towns and a standardization was sparked. The designs of hand-knotted Indian rugs today can hardly be attributed to individual regions. Rather, workshops have specialized in the implementation of European and traditional Iranian designs adapted to Western tastes. In terms of quality, rugs from India benefit from a long tradition of craftsmanship and high quality Indian materials. This rug has been knotted in Bidjar, in the province of Kermanshah in the northwest of Iran. Bijar rugs are among the most solid and the highest quality oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

The Kurdish Bijars use a particularly thick weft yarn, which is extremely hard. The result is a plank-hard, extremely durable rug. Younger Bidjars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, which is also called the fish pattern.

Patterns

The embellished edging (border) forms a excellent contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

In the middle of the central field of this Bijar is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The repeating elements in the center field of this Bijar rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.

The background of this Bijar is old rose. The colors dark blue and old rose dominate the overall impression. The border features blue gray and beige.

Condition

This Bijar has had admirers before you. It was hand knotted about 1970 and has served devotedly ever since. All in all, it is still in good condition and can still bring satisfaction for decades. We have not restored this Bijar, because we think it is as it is a special charm. If that is what you would like, we will be happy to restore the rug for you, of course.

Material

The pile of this Bijar has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
