Origin and design

The central Persian city of Keshan (also spelled Kashan or Keschan) lies geographically between the slopes of the Zagros Mountains and the Persian desert regions. Thanks to its climate and the caravans that traversed the country, it was—at least until the Safavids moved their capital to Isfahan—a flourishing metropolis, particularly renowned for its textile and carpet production. It still retains the elegance and splendor of that era. Keshan carpets are exquisite textiles crafted in the ancient tradition. Traditionally, production in Keshan took place in the weavers' homes. The pile is typically knotted from exceptionally soft wool, resulting in a particularly dense and compact weave.
