Origin and design

Carpet weaving in Nepal only began in 1959, after the Dalai Lama and his Tibetan companions fled the country. Under the guidance of the dedicated Zurich importer Jo Iten-Maritz, the displaced people were trained from 1966 onwards to weave carpets according to traditional Tibetan patterns. When the carpet designs were adapted to contemporary Western tastes, Nepal's carpet production increased significantly. The capital city, Kathmandu, is the central purchasing hub and also home to the majority of the production facilities.

Nepal carpets are woven using a special technique. A continuous knot is looped linearly around a rod, creating a horizontal row of loops. Once the rod is completely covered with these loops, they are cut from above, causing the pile to fan out and form a velvety texture. The knot ultimately takes on the form of a Persian knot. However, this rapid process is only possible because the Nepal-Tibetan carpets are largely unpatterned and plain in color.
