Origin and design

This carpet originates from Sarough (also spelled Sarouk, Saruk, or Sarogh). Sarough is one of the most renowned carpet-weaving regions in Iran. Located in the western Persian province of Aarak, it encompasses the provinces of Arak, Djozan, Ghiasabad, Mahal, Malayer, Mohajeran, Sultanabad, and Wiss. In Sarough, Persian patterns of all kinds are woven, sometimes even according to customer specifications. Typical of this type of carpet is the very high quality of the wool pile, as the virgin wool comes from the Persian highlands. The backing fabric—warp and weft—is usually made of cotton. Old and antique carpets often feature a blue weft thread. The knotting is very fine, and the pile is relatively high. Carpets like this one are called Sarough Mir. Framed by a border, the patterned field is adorned with the so-called Mir-i-Boteh design. The Mir-i-Boteh pattern consists of a curved almond motif that stands upright and forms a row. Whether depicted naturalistically or abstractly, it is immediately recognizable by its curved tip. The shape has often been described as a flame—associated with the fire cult of the Parsis, followers of Zoroaster—or as a bent palm leaf. It is considered likely that the pattern was inspired by cypress trees. In Europe, the almond-shaped element of the pattern is known as paisley.
