Origin and design

The city of Shiraz is the capital of the Iranian province of Shiraz and is located in southwestern Iran. Originally, carpets in this region were woven by nomads who lived there. Most of them have now settled in smaller villages within the province.

The pattern of so-called Shiraz carpets—typical of nomadic carpets—consists of motifs with simple geometric shapes and diamonds in the center. The background is often red, and the motifs are rendered in various shades of blue. Occasionally, carpets with stylized floral and bird motifs are also woven.

Shiraz carpets are traditional peasant carpets and are therefore very robust and of extremely high quality.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
