Place of origin

In the geographical region of Anatolia, or Asia Minor, and bordering areas, rugs like this one are traditionally handmade for personal use, local trade and sometimes also for export. Anatolian rugs are an important part of the culture and heritage of modern Turkey. Throughout the long history of Anatolia and the craft of rug making, different cultural influences have been integrated into the designs. Traces of Byzantine ornamentation can be found in rug designs, as well as traditional patterns and decorations of the Turkic peoples, who migrated there from Central Asia. Greeks, Armenians, Caucasian and Kurdish tribes living in Anatolia or migrating there at different times also brought their traditional patterns with them. Finally, Islam and the development of Islamic art influenced the design of Anatolian rugs. Thus, the political and ethnic history and diversity of Asia Minor can be deduced from the patterns made by Anatolian rug weavers.

Patterns

The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this York. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The repeating elements in the center field of this York rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.

The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a excellent contrast to the center.

The background of this York is beige. The border features rusty red, yellow beige and blue gray.

Material

The pile of this York has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this York are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
