Origin

Belutsch is a rug provenance in the region between Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Belutsch rugs (also Belutsch, Beloutch, Beluch, Baluch, Belutch, Balouch, Baloutche or Balúchi) are made by semi-nomads and nomads. Originally, Belutsch rugs were knotted exclusively by the Baluch nomads. Today, however, a number of other tribes knot Belutsch rugs as well. The patterns tend to be geometric and the palette is kept in shades of red and brown. Mostly small rugs and mats are produced, as these are also used by the nomads themselves and are easier to transport.

Pattern

The decorated surround (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

In the pattern of this Belutsch it is above all the diamonds that catch the eye. A diamond is a rhombus standing on one of its points, and in the Oriental rug its four equal sides may be serrated, stepped or set with hooks. The diamond is one of the oldest basic forms in the Oriental rug. In the Islamic world it carries a symbolic meaning: it stands for the immortality of the soul. That is why it is so often found as a filler motif.

The background of this Belutsch is rust red. The border is worked in rust red, curry and beige.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Belutsch. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was hand-knotted around 1960. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile is worn in places. The edges are damaged in parts. The fringes could do with a repair. We have not restored this Belutsch because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course be happy to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Belutsch will bring you joy for decades to come.

Material

The pile of this Belutsch was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Belutsch is made of new wool.
