Origin

Berber rugs were traditionally knotted for use in the home. The weavers, mostly women, played freely and spontaneously with shapes and colours – without any pattern templates – following their personal ideas and their individual intuition. This is why the traditional pattern of Moroccan Berber rugs typically consists of geometric, sometimes colourful, abstract shapes and lines on monochrome backgrounds. Our Furry Berbers are inspired by traditional Moroccan Berber rugs and their high pile.

Architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Charles and Ray Eames, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer and Arne Jacobsen loved the naive, clear design of these high-pile Moroccan nomad rugs. Their powerful artistic expression gives them an extraordinary presence and makes Berber rugs quite incomparable – even setting aside how soft they feel underfoot.

Pattern

The clear, abstract design of this contemporary rug speaks especially to people who love simple, modern interiors and architecture. The design idea for this rug comes from Europe. Free from the rules of traditional rug patterns, it was developed for Western art and interior styles. That is not an entirely new development, though. The roots of European rug design go back to Art Deco rugs, which were made to Western specifications between the late twenties and the fifties.

The surface of this Furry Berber has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug forgiving when it comes to dirt. These so-called colour shifts, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier look. The mottling comes about because the wool of this Furry Berber was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural pigments are absorbed to differing degrees.

The background of this Furry Berber is silver grey. The overall impression is also dominated by blue-grey and beige.

Condition

You aren't the first to take a liking to this Furry Berber. It had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. The pile has become a little thinner in places. It was hand-knotted around 2024. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. That is why it is in very good condition – despite its age.

Material

The naturally dyed, hand-spun wool in the fluffy pile of this Berber rug creates fascinating, shifting patterns. Our Berber rugs are hand-knotted and will last a lifetime. Even so, their long pile makes them unusually soft and fluffy. A Berber rug feels almost like a soft blanket you would happily take to bed with you. The weft and warp threads of this Furry Berber are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
