Our Furry Kelims are part knotted and part woven.

The knotted sections of the rug are shaggy and irregular. That gives these rugs an unmistakable feel. Every knot is tied by hand, creating a pattern and a character all of its own.

The woven sections of the rug, by contrast, have a smoother surface and a more even structure. They form the base on which the knotted areas are built up.

Together these different techniques create a fascinating contrast and a varied texture that appeals to the eye as much as to the touch. Every Furry Kelim is a one-of-a-kind piece and shows the skill and talent of the women who knotted it. This piece is half knotted and half woven.

Pattern

The pile is kept in a single shade of beige. The plain design is restrained, yet it can also set a wonderful decorative accent. The monochrome look of this rug fits in superbly wherever you put it.

The straight, even stripes of this Furry Kelim order and structure the pattern.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Furry Kelim is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant colours is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dye per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, you even need two kilograms of weld dye per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is just as time-consuming and labour-intensive. And fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.
