Origin and design

The city of Kerman (also spelled Kirman) lies in southeastern Persia at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters. Situated on ancient caravan routes, Kerman boasts a centuries-old tradition in both craftsmanship and trade. Kerman is mentioned in Marco Polo's travelogue, *Il Milione*. Kerman carpets are characterized by delicate patterns, flowing lines, and subtle color gradations. The classic 19th-century designs often feature figurative motifs. Hunting scenes and animals were depicted, as well as mythological figures and historical personalities. The broad color palette of Kerman carpets is particularly enriched by a variety of red hues, traditionally derived from cochineal insects.
