Origin

The way Nakhunak rugs are made is unlike any other. Two very different techniques are combined to create relief-like, slightly raised areas that give the pattern its particular accent. The raised areas are hand-knotted, the lower-lying areas crocheted.

The classic pattern of Nakhunak rugs consists of repeating diamonds framed by a wide, richly varied border. The colouring is traditionally restrained and keeps essentially to warm, earthy tones.

 

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Nakhunak its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and doesn't take attention away from the furniture, the decor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

A lightly suggested border frames the edge of this rug.

In the pattern of this Nakhunak it is above all the diamonds that stand out. A diamond is a rhombus standing on one of its points, and in the Oriental rug its four equal sides may be serrated, stepped or set with hooks. The diamond is one of the oldest basic forms in the Oriental rug. In the Islamic world it carries a symbolic meaning: it stands for the immortality of the soul. That is why it is so often found as a filler motif.

Individual areas of the pattern have a higher pile than the rest of this rug. The patterns of modern rugs are tending to become plainer and more abstract. Playing with different pile heights is a new approach, and it has replaced more elaborate, more insistent patterns. Because parts of the pattern have been brought out in two dimensions, though, the rug never looks dull. The accentuation is out of the ordinary and has a truly distinctive effect.

The background of this Nakhunak is beige. The border is kept in beige.

 

Material

The pile of this rug was made from high-quality wool yarns. The wool was dyed with natural dyes. This gives the pattern a particularly harmonious effect. The crocheted sections consist only of warp and weft threads, so they have no thick, upward-facing pile. The hand-knotted sections, by contrast, have a dense, upward-facing pile. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Nakhunak is made of new wool.
