Origin

The pattern of this New Schirwan draws on the design elements of classic Bakhtiari rugs. This rug, however, was not knotted in the Caucasus but in Pakistan.

Schirwan (also Shirvan) rugs are knotted by hand in the eastern Caucasus, in the Schirwan region. They are knotted from exceptionally fine wool and have a low pile. Old Schirwans are held in high regard by collectors in Europe and fetch strong prices.

The wide border is characteristic of Schirwan rugs. The field is often dominated by imaginative geometric patterns. In terms of colour, these rugs are frequently knotted in blue, though red and ivory tones are common too. The many-coloured patterns give rise to a refined and varied palette.

Material

The pile of this New Schirwan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.
