Origin

The town of Senneh is called Sanandadj today and is the hub of the west Persian province of Kurdistan. Incidentally, alongside its rugs, Sanandadj is famous throughout Iran for its backgammon sets handcrafted from walnut burl wood. Senneh rugs are now sometimes referred to as Sanandadj rugs as well. Classic Senneh rugs have only a single weft thread, which makes them easy to identify from the back. The more finely they are knotted, the shorter the pile is sheared.

Pattern

The edge of the rug is framed by a surround (border). The border forms a splendid contrast to the centre.

The lush floral motifs of this Senneh are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, showing blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

This Senneh has a great deal of character. The labyrinth-like background is hypnotic and incredibly detailed. The repeating elements in the field of this Senneh rug have no specific centre (what's known as a repeat pattern). The recurring pattern feels calming without ever becoming dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over patterned.

The background of this Senneh is dark blue. The overall impression is also dominated by light red and multicoloured tones. The border is worked in multicoloured tones and light red.

Condition

This Senneh has a story to tell. It was hand-knotted around 1950. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The sides are damaged in places. We have not fully restored this Senneh because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that's what you'd like, we'll gladly take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Senneh was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Senneh are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.
