Origin

The city of Tabriz (also written Täbriz or Täbris) on the northern border of Persia has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups, thanks to its position at the crossroads of countless caravan routes. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz traded, and still trade, in craftwork and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages. The signature translates as: "Olia"

 

Pattern

The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

The lavish floral motifs of this Tabriz are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

In the middle of the central field of this Tabriz lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion seems to float on the field.

A special highlight of this Tabriz is its signature. The signature records that it was made in one of the most renowned knotting workshops in Tabriz. Written in Arabic script, it expresses the individuality and the noble origin of this rug.

The background of this Tabriz is beige. The overall impression is dominated by dusky pink and beige as well. The border is worked in dusky pink, beige and blue-grey.

 

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from cork wool and silk. Cork wool, also known as kurk wool, is a particularly fine-threaded knotting yarn that feels almost velvety. Cork wool is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is especially high in quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, won by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and let the colours glow in different nuances, depending on how the light falls. The weft threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. The warp threads are made of pure silk .
