Origin

Classic floral ornament paired with contemporary aesthetics – for this hand-knotted Tapis we drew our inspiration from the flowering patterns of French tapestry rugs.

We reworked the traditional ornaments, pared them back and, above all, rearranged the colouring completely. The result is a fusion of traditional rug design and modern European aesthetics. With our Tapis design we set out to meet the trends of European interiors, playing freely with the conventions of traditional rug knotting.

Pattern

The lush floral motifs of this Tapis are elegantly drawn and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The surface of this Tapis has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug from showing dirt. These so-called colour variations, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier feel. The mottling comes about because the wool of this Tapis was hand-spun. When it is dyed, the natural dyes are absorbed to differing degrees.

A lightly suggested border frames the edge of this rug.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Tapis is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant-based colours is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical dyes. For a glowing red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dye per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale you even need two kilograms of the dyestuff weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time-consuming and labour-intensive as well. And fewer and fewer people still master the craft of spinning wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: because it is dyed with natural colours, the high-quality wool keeps its natural lanolin content. Wool dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shifting patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style. The weft and warp threads of this Tapis are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic and therefore particularly suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
