Origin
Some of our old Oriental rugs are given a more modern look through an elaborate process. We call these rugs vintage rugs. Vintage rugs are design objects in which traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary interior culture. The new dyeing lends the traditional patterns of Oriental rugs a timeless character. Rugs whose colours are no longer in fashion are given a second life in a more modern guise. Using old rugs as the raw material for new products saves resources and is sustainable.
Pattern
The surface of this vintage rug has a mottled look. The changes in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug forgiving of dirt. These so-called colour shifts, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier feel. The mottling occurs because the wool of this vintage rug was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural pigments are absorbed to differing degrees.
Individual areas of the pattern have a higher pile than the rest of this rug. The patterns of modern rugs are tending to become plainer and more abstract. Playing with different pile heights is a new approach, and it has replaced more elaborate, more insistent patterns. Because parts of the pattern have been brought out in two dimensions, though, the rug never looks dull. The accentuation is out of the ordinary and has a truly distinctive effect.
The decorated surround (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.
The lavish floral motifs of this vintage rug are elegantly designed and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.
The background of this vintage rug is blue-grey. Gold-beige also dominates the overall impression. The border is worked in blue-grey and gold-beige.
Condition
This vintage rug has a story to tell. It was hand-knotted around 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
Material
The pile of this vintage rug is hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this vintage rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
