Origin

Heriz (also Heris) is an important place of origin for hand-knotted rugs. Heriz lies in the far west of Iran, on the border with Azerbaijan. Rugs from Heriz are famous for their beautiful geometricised designs. Typical of Heriz rugs is their lustrous wool in a wonderful palette of colours. This old Heriz is around 80 years old and a real collector's piece.

Pattern

The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

The lavish floral motifs of this Heriz are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The background of this Heriz is light red. The border is worked in pink and a mix of bright colours.

Condition

This Heriz has had admirers before you. It was hand-knotted around 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The fringes could do with a repair. In places the rug's colours have run into one another. In a few spots you can see some white threads. That is perfectly normal in older rugs. These are the knot ends of the weft and warp weave, which work their way to the surface over the years. In substance, that is not a major problem. We have not restored this Heriz because we feel it has a special presence exactly as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course be happy to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Heriz will give you pleasure for decades to come.

Material

The pile of this Heriz was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Heriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
