Origin

Tetex rugs come from the manufactory of the same name, which produced rugs in Germany – and later in Belgium – during the 20th century. Tetex rugs were usually tufted, a technique that made it possible to produce high-quality rugs comparatively quickly. The result was rugs with an Oriental look whose distinctive, often large-scale patterns still delight us today. A glorious retro rug that recalls times gone by – and today looks as contemporary as ever. This is what is known as a Tapex rug.

Pattern

The decorated surround (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

This Tetex rug is graced by the so-called Mehrab or Mihrab motif. Mehrab is the name for the Islamic prayer niche in mosques, which marks the qibla, the direction of prayer towards Mecca. Rugs bearing the Mehrab motif have traditionally been used by Muslims for prayer, which makes them especially precious.

The background of this Tetex rug is light red. The border is worked in beige and light red.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Tetex rug. It has had owners before you who treasured and used it. It was hand-tufted around 1960. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. We have not fully restored this Tetex rug, because we feel it has a special presence just the way it is. If you would like us to, we will of course carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Tetex rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
